Masquerade Ball Labyrinth of Jareth 2014

By: JaW Images Photography

Thanks to Calee and Sypher Art Studios, I was able to attend the Labyrinth of Jareth and cover it for Geek Girls.

The Labyrinth of Jareth is a 2-day classical, fantasy Masquerade Ball in Los Angeles, California. This Ball combines the tradition of a Venetian masquerade with Celtic faerie & goblin lore, as well as amazingly-talented set and costume designers and special fx artists. This fantastical all-ages event has been going on for 17 years and counting...so if you havenít had the fortune of attending, hopefully this will encourage a new crop of attendees for 2015.

Tira from Soul Calibur 3 Cosplay

Cosplayer Khainsaw looks awesome as Tira from Soul Calibur 3 at Anime Expo 2014! Here's what she had to say...

"Cosplaying Tira was kind of a big deal for me, I fell in love with her character design way before I even really knew about cosplay, so cosplaying her was kind of like cosplaying one of my dream cosplays. I was really into the fact that they gave her a ringblade because I love circles. To make the ringblade, I sent the specs to my friend Jason, who got it cut out of a lightweight flexible plastic for me, and then I painted it. I styled the wig bangs using hot glue, which is apparently an odd thing to do? But it worked so no complaints! The pants and gloves are made out of a really nice velvet, and the rest is made out of jersey. The knee armor is made from the plastic parts of my old roller derby kneepads covered in metallic spandex. I love this cosplay and will definitely wear it again, it's one of my most comfortable. (NO HEELS, YAY!) The photographer is the awesome John Leman Jr !"

And here is how you can make your own... But be warned - it can take several weekends."

R2-D2 Yoga Pants

WANT! We love these new R2-D2 Ladies' Yoga Pants! They would be great for workouts or for just lazing around the house watching Star Wars! :)

Now R2 has legs!

Sometimes we feel like we understand R2's bleeps and bloops better than we understand the machines we use during workouts. METS? Aren't they a baseball team? Shouldn't that be on the TV and not the elliptical machine? And SPM, which we like to think of as SPUTUM. Also, the Heart Rate Monitor just told us we were dead.

Beep beep bloop. What's that little guy? Luke fell down the well?! Thanks, R2! Let's go get him out.

The right leg of these yoga pants is decorated with a details from R2-D2. Featuring a blue fold-over waist printed with a repeat of his dome, these heather grey pants have leg seams on the inside. 95% cotton/ 5% spandex. Machine wash cold. Tumble dry low or lay flat to dry. Imported.

Squirrel Girl Cosplay

Cosplayer Galacticat looks totally epic and adorable as Marvel's Squirrel Girl! Here's what she had to say...

"Squirrel Girl is such a fun character and one of my absolute favorites to cosplay. The majority of this costume wasn't too terribly difficult to put together - but that tail! I wanted a big ol' fluffy tail, and figuring out how to attach it (and make it easily detachable) was quite a challenge. I went through a couple of different attachment setups and harnesses before I finally settled on something that works pretty well.

This was a costume I continuously updated, and by DragonCon 2013 I finally had it 100% complete, with improved harness, brand new utility belt, and a new pink bow for Tippy-Toe. It wasn't until C2E2 this year that I was finally able to do a photoshoot in my improved costume - though, just my luck, I lost one of my gloves right before the shoot! I was so mad at myself, but despite having to go gloveless, I think the photos turned out wonderfully, and I greatly enjoyed working with my photographer."

We All Can Only Be Who We Are, No More, No Less. (An Article on Cosplay Negativity)

Article by two Kahlans: Princess Nightmare and Mistress Jessie

Geek Girls Princess Nightmare and Mistress Jessie wrote this article on being yourself in cosplay, and some of the negativity that often comes with cosplay.
"We all can only be who we are, no more, no less." This is a quote from Kahlan Amnell, the Mother Confessor in the Sword of Truth Book series. A quote that implies as individuals, we can only be ourselves and nothing more or less. And as cosplayers and fans of the book series, we wholeheartedly agree.

Clary and Izzy (The Mortal Instruments). Cara and Kahlan (Sword of Truth/Legend of the Seeker). Frankie Stein and Draculara (Monter High). Princess Nightmare and Mistress Jessie (Cosplayers). We are a team and friends like the characters mentioned! As a team and friends, we assist each other in our cosplay journey. We also are quite protective of one another, and protection is sometimes needed in our cosplay journey. Unfortunately this journey includes ridicule and unnecessary attacks from individuals on us as because of who we are and on our beloved costumes.
