Avalon Expo 2

This year I was ever so lucky to be invited out east to St. John's Newfoundland for Avalon Expo 2, and boy was it a blast! East coast hospitality is the best. The morning that Avalon Expo 2 opened Justin, the MC of the convention and myself were invited to CBC Radio for a brief interview, and then CBC News caught up with us later at the convention itself.
All the volunteers and organizers were prompt and thoughtful. The vendors had lots of neat things, and the cosplayers were dressed to the nines.  But most of all, everyone was so social and kind. Special shout out to Sam's Sweets for providing us with a little taste of her selection! It was definitely the sugar that kept me going over the course of the weekend. As one of the guests of honour I hosted two panels: Cosplay 101, so you wanna be a cosplayer and CosPLAY a focus on getting into character and posing for the camera in addition to helping judge the masquerade and of course, cosplaying myself. On Friday I brought out my classic 90's Rogue which I hadn't worn to a convention since 2013. On Saturday I debuted a brand new cosplay that I made specifically for Avalon, an original design of Mera that I created (and my first time working with scalemaille). Lastly on Sunday I donned Enchantress from Suicide Squad. In addition to events I'm already familiar with at other conventions: the cosplay masquerade, geeky speed dating, larping etc. there was cosplay chess! Pieces are represented by cosplayers who then "battle" when pieces over take each other. It was my first time ever playing and I managed to be a pawn that became a queen! There were crazy performances by East Coast Conditioning/cirque'letics dressed as Suicide Squad's Harley Quinn doing not aerial silks, but aerial chains! Other guests of honour included the incredible SFX artist Todd Debreceni and award winning sci-fi author Robert J. Sawyer who each had panels and demonstrations of their own. And of course lots of gaming from video to table top could be seen all over the convention. Huge thanks are owed to Jeff Power who organized the whole affair and all of the volunteers that supported the event. (Special shout out goes to Peggy for being the best guest liaison a girl could hope for!) It was a beautiful weekend and I really hope I can make it back out east for the next instalment of AvEx!
