Tomb Raider, Movie Style, Holsters Tutorial
|
Tutorial by: Teryl
Here's a tutorial for all you crafty Croft fans out there! I had a lot of comments and questions about my holsters when I was at Fan Expo Vancouver, so I thought I'd write up a tutorial on how to make them yourself. I tried to make the instructions as straight forward as possible, so even beginner sewers/crafters can make these. Happy crafting!

Measurements:
• Main strap - 2 1/2" x 14"
• Holster backing - 5 1/4" x 8" (see template)
• Holster front - approx. 5" x 4 3/4" (see template)
• Holster strap - 7/8" x 5 1/2"
• Thigh strap - measure appropriate length for your thigh, giving an extra few inches for adjustment
Supplies Needed:
• Ruler
• Scissors
• Pen or Sharpie
• Cardboard
• Sewing machine
• Leather sewing machine needle
• Iron and ironing board
• Hammer and hole punch kit or snap tool
• Black thread
• 1/4 meter of black faux-leather/vinyl
• 1/4 meter of black, heavy cotton/polyester material
• 1 package of Heat n Bond (feather light) iron on adhesive
• 2 black snaps
• 2 pieces of 2" wide by 2 1/2" black Velcro
• 1 package of 1" wide black crafting elastic
• 2 black plastic clips
Step 1: - Make your 2 stencils using the measurements from the templates provided.
Step 2: Cut out 2 of each holster piece in both the faux-leather and the cotton/polyester fabric. NOTE: When cutting out the main strap only use the faux-leather. You can double the measurement for length and just sew it folded on itself.
Step 3: Cut out 1 piece of Heat n Bond per holster section and iron onto the back of the faux-leather cut-outs. Make sure you follow the packages directions for heat setting and time.
Step 4: Iron cotton/polyester fabric to the back of the faux-leather pieces, thus ensuring that your holster has a complete/finished look.
Step 5: Sew a 1/4" stitch line on the main straps, holster front and holster strap pieces. This will give your holster a more professional look.
Step 6: Sew the velcro to the main strap, ensuring enough of a loop to wrap around your belt.
Step 7: Sew the main strap onto the holster backing.
Step 8: Cut slots for your thigh strap to run through on the holster backing, 1" in from either side, starting about 2" up from the bottom of the holster.
Step 9: Sew holster front piece and strap to the holster backing. (See picture for proper placement)
Step 10: Attach snaps to the holster front and strap using a snap tool and/or hammer and punch kit. (See instructions on back of snap packaging) NOTE: snap placement depends on the size of gun to be holstered.
Step 11: Cut length of black elastic for around your thigh and sew one end to the plastic clip. Pull the elastic through the slots you cut in the holster backing and adjust for comfort.
Step 12: Enjoy your new, kick ass, Lara Croft holsters!
