Geek Girl Mythos Shoots
Hey everyone! Some of the Geek Girls teamed up to bring their favorite characters from mythology to life in their own concepts and creations. Each girl chose their character and made their cosplay to match their vision. They also added a brief write up about their choices, sets and everything in between. This is the first set as we have another coming soon with more of the girls! Check it out...
Character: Theia, Greek Titaness of Sight and Sky
Geek Girl: Critical Miss
Photographer/edits: Richard Dufault
"I decided to portray the goddess that my name comes from. The Greek Titaness of sight and the clear blue sky. Theia (Thea) is also the mother of the Sun (Helios), the Moon (Selene) and the Dawn (Eos)."
Character: Ran, Norse Goddess of the sea
Geek Girl: Jenn Marvel
Photographer: Ailes Noir Cosplay Photography
Gills: Paul Jones Effects Studio
"I made this cosplay entirely from scratch. I put together the dress using left over fabric from my gambit cosplay and and scorpion cosplay. I bought a fishing net and seashells from the dollar store and glued them on one by one. Everything was sewn and glued by hand. The trident was my Aquawoman trident I bought from the dollar store and then glued hundreds of seashells to it. I covered parts of the net and chest piece with moss and sea plants. I am good friends with Paul Jones FX and I mentioned I was doing this and he offered to sculpt and mold me a set of silicone gills.. they were truly amazing. I am so grateful to have such a talented friend. He has been a big inspiration to me. I hope to be working with him again very soon on some upcoming projects/creatures :)"
Character: Hel, Norse Mythology
Geek Girl: Northern Belle
Photographer: ArtistiCurves
Makeup: Skin Detailz
"Straight out of Helheim one of my favourite mythological characters has always been Hel. The daughter of Loki, she had two brothers the wolf Fenrir and the world serpent Jörmungandr. When the gods discovered the existence of these three children it was prophesied that "great mischief and disaster would arise from them" Their basis was on the nature of the children's parents and as a result Odin threw Jörmungandr into the deep sea that lies round all lands, and banished Hel to Niflheim. At first as someone rather fond of duality I was drawn in by Hel's appearance. She was often described as "Half black and half flesh coloured" or "rather downcast and fierce looking" but as I read more about her I found the story line fascinating. I firmly believe that everything is connected and thus the consequences of our actions are not always apparent to us. In that same way a parents sins can be visited upon the child such as with Loki and Hel. Similarly, the story taught me about expectations and how appearances can be deceiving. I've wanted to execute this concept since I was quite young, and am thrilled that with the assistance of ArtistiCurves and Skin Detailz we were able to pull it off. The results were better than I had hoped for. The shoot was also accepted into the May issue of Art Katalyst magazine in their "Death & Rebirth" issue. Remember, just because someone puts their best face forward, doesn't mean there isn't a beast still lurking beneath the surface. "
Character: Nyx, Greek Goddess of the Night
Geek Girl: Teryl Dactyl
Photographer: Tobin Sagara Photography
"An exceptionally powerful and beautiful goddess, Nyx is night personified. She is the Greek goddess who lives in shadows of the world, stood at the edge of creation and gave birth to sleep and death. "
Character: Hades, Greek God of the Underworld
Geek Girl: Scarlett Quinn
Photographer: Solus Haze
Smoke: CJW
"I decided on Doing a stylized version of what I thought a female Hades would look like and I used a lot of blue as a nod to Disneys Hercules' version of Hades. I did the photo shoot in a bog with a smoke grenade and I love how it turned out!"
Character: Medusa, The Greek Gorgon
Geek Girl: Player Two
Photographer: WildBunnyhair Photo studios
" I chose Medusa, my absolute favorite Greek Creature, because I love how she turns people into stone with simply a look. Personally I also think the way she dies is super poetic and awesome. I had a blast shooting her with the amazing Wildbunnyhair Photo Studios in an eerie swamp, despite the many mosquito bites on my butt."
Character: Isis, Egyptian Goddess of the Sky
Geek Girl: Zelda
Photographers: Grant Palmer Photography & Henry Neves
"This shoot was done as a group photo shoot with my meetup group Alt+3rR0r LA. I organized it with gods and goddesses from multiple pantheons. I made an Isis outfit because I've always loved Egyptian mythology - when I was in elementary school one of the first things I wanted to be when I grew up was an Egyptologist! We shot the photos at the Pasadena City Hall which is a beautiful building (it's the City Hall they use in Parks and Rev)"
