Geek Girl Zelda recently attended the awesome horror convention Monsterpalooza in Burbank, California!
Monsterpalooza is a 3 day horror and Special FX convention in Burbank, California. It was held in the Marriott Hotel and had a variety of talented artists and vendors. Live special FX makeup demos were being done at at least half a dozen booths, from an awesome Carnage bodypaint to post-apocalyptic fairies and demons. There weren't as many people in attendance in full costume as you'd find at a comic or anime convention, but the ones that were there were cool - Lots of clowns, zombies, werewolves, fursuiters (I'm not sure why they were there), tattooed rockabilly girls and guys with mohawks were in attendance. There were spectacular sculptures everywhere we looked - there was so much talent at the convention it was almost sensory overload. Several contestants from all the seasons of Face Off had booths, were doing makeup demos and were walking around the convention floor. There were many special FX and digital art schools promoting their methods of teaching, and we got the chance to look at some new materials and methods of prop-building.
The convention heavily focused on classic horror and campy films - there were Kaiju monsters, Blaxploitation horror, slashers, indie films, and more. And after attending so many conventions over the years, it was nice to be at one that had very little overlap on vendors and exhibitors - Almost everything I was seeing I was seeing for the first time. Even the celebrities were people I have never seen at a convention, including the original Ultraman, Linda Blair, Ace Frehley from KISS, GWAR, Al Leong, The Chiodo Brothers (Killer Klowns from Outer Space), Tom Savini, Caroll Spinny (the Muppeteer for Big Bird and Oscar The Grouch).
