Put On Purple (Cosplays) Day - Lupus Awareness

Talented cosplayer Lolita Bot is promoting her lupus awareness campaign, Put On Purple (Cosplays) Day! Here's some info on what lupus is and what POP Cosplays Day is all about...

Put On Purple (Cosplays) Day - Lupus Awareness

"In lupus, something goes wrong with your immune system, which is the part of the body that fights off viruses, bacteria, and germs ("foreign invaders," like the flu). Normally our immune system produces proteins called antibodies that protect the body from these invaders. Autoimmune means your immune system cannot tell the difference between these foreign invaders and your body’s healthy tissues ("auto" means "self") and creates autoantibodies that attack and destroy healthy tissue. These autoantibodies cause inflammation, pain, and damage in various parts of the body.

The most common symptoms of lupus, which are the same for females and males, are:
• Extreme fatigue (tiredness)
• Headaches
• Painful or swollen joints
• Fever
• Anemia (low numbers of red blood cells or hemoglobin, or low total blood volume)
• Swelling (edema) in feet, legs, hands, and/or around eyes
• Pain in chest on deep breathing (pleurisy)
• Butterfly-shaped rash across cheeks and nose
• Sun- or light-sensitivity (photosensitivity)
• Hair loss
• Abnormal blood clotting
• Fingers turning white and/or blue when cold (Raynaud’s phenomenon)
• Mouth or nose ulcers

Lupus (also known as systemic lupus erythematosus) can be life-threatening and fatal at worst, and is often physically crippling from the overwhelming and chronic pain and weakness it causes even in less serious cases. It also causes other complications, such as strokes, heart attacks, pulmonary embolisms, and general organ damage and failure, especially of the kidneys and renal system. Frequent hospitalizations are not uncommon for those with moderate to severe cases of the disease. SLE has no cure and the treatments are less than ideal, often involving long-term and/or life-long use of steroids, chemotherapy, and immunosuppressants that can themselves cause cancer, all of which make patients with already high susceptibility to infections even more vulnerable.

Help us raise awareness for SLE by participating in and sponsoring "Put On Purple (Cosplays) Day", a worldwide social media awareness campaign every May, coinciding with the Lupus Foundation of America's "Put On Purple Day".

As the date of national POP Day changes year to year, follow us to stay updated on dates and specifics of the event as they are announced. Typically, POP (Cosplays) Day also involves a corresponding charity gaming stream and various charity drives to benefit the Lupus Foundation of America, so follow us to stay informed of those affiliated events as well!

Conventions or businesses interested in helping to promote and/or sponsor the campaign should contact lolitabotcosplay@yahoo.com. Find the POP (Cosplays) Day Official page here.
