Northern Panic Cosplay Clean Up!

Northern Belle wrote about her recent annual Northern Panic Cosplay City Clean Up and shared lots of fun photos and video from the event...
"The Northern Panic Cosplay City Clean Up is an annual event that allows cosplayers to celebrate Earth Day in costume and give back to the community. Cities aren't particularly known for their cleanliness, especially those located in the downtown core of Toronto. We routinely pick Allan Gardens for a number of reasons: it is a beautiful location, has a gorgeous and extensive green house, a dog park, two churches and a playground for kids. In addition to all this it is also known for the homeless population that frequents it. As such, it is the perfect location for us to give back to our community, while still having fun and taking cosplay photos.

We really only have a few "rules" to speak of. The most important of which is that everyone wear gloves for protection. We make sure to bring latex free, hypoallergenic gloves and of course, lots of garbage bags. Due to the fact that we discover not only 'gross' things, but also dangerous items our second rule is that youngin's must be accompanied by an adult lest they discover something scary on their own.

Fortunately this year That Joker Guy and GG Northern Belle Rogue were the only two to discover hypodermic needles. Making it one less found than the previous year. Other "interesting" items included various drug paraphernalia, numerous bottle caps, lids, various wrappers and wrappings, feminine hygiene products, the corner of an American hundred dollar bill, a few house keys and more newspapers and cigarette butts than we could possibly count.

The last rule was established after our first year doing this event; if you find a stash of canned food or clothing - leave it. Our goal is to support the community and the environment. While yes, our aim is to clean up the park, ultimately we believe in the mantra "Do no harm". As we are aware of the population that frequents the area our aim is not to make their lives more difficult. The discrimination and prejudice homeless people face is not something we encourage and we hope that by having this event in such a location it can help people overcome their own biases.

However, as with most things, it only takes one guy to ruin it for everyone. This year, as we began to set up for the event one particularly intoxicated individual went from obnoxious screaming to extremely inappropriate behaviour for a public park where there are many kids about. While we might have ignored the open can of beer, once he began exposing himself we knew we had to take action. Our first order of the day, was to "clean up" that mess. You can see this, as well as other discoveries from the event in our coverage video shot by Sean Ward of The Sean Ward Show.

Perhaps the most rewarding part of the whole experience is when various strangers approached us to thank us for cleaning up the park. This came in the form of dog walkers, Allan Gardens staff, parents and even a couple of the police officers who were out on patrol. It was wonderful to see people so excited and of course we stopped for a fair few photos with interested parties. That said, not every member of our team was dressed up, as always cosplay is optional for the comfort of attendees. Big thanks are owed to all the cosplayers and people who came out to help us celebrate Earth Day! We can't wait to see y'all again next year!"
