Magik Cosplay

The Aerial Nerd looks amazing cosplaying as Magik from X-Men in these photos taken at
DragonCon by

"I picked up my first X-Men comic back in September of 1993 and instantly
fell in love with the characters. Back then, comic book stores had a ton
of back issues and I was able to read back to the mid 70's during the
start of Chris Claremont's amazing run on X-Men. An arc I will always
remember is the one he did about Illyana Rusputin (Magik) and her
journey into limbo. She had been transformed into a 13 year old girl
(about the same age as me at the time!) and I was floored by the story
line of this young girl having to fight and outwit her way out of that
terrible place and back home to the X-Men. Over the years, I have grown
up into the woman I am today...and Magik has grown up too! The sexy
black outfit she wears in recent years on the X-Men team represents this
change. Marvel artists and writers have done away with the full body
suit that she has donned since her teenage years and given her something
more bold and risque. I think this change was long over due and I am
glad to see Magik dressing like the strong, sexy woman she now is.
Creating this outfit was a challenge for someone like me. I consider
myself more of a "nerd who occasionally cosplays" than a "cosplayer". I
am an expert when it comes to characters but still new to bringing them
to life. Creating the Soul Sword (at least the Phoenix Blade copycat she
now uses) was definitely the biggest challenge. The thing is huge and
has a glass-like/semi transparent quality to it. I decided to construct
it out of acrylic (which is a very difficult material to work with) and
I had to use a chemical bonding agent to attach all of the pieces
together. But the end result was well worth it and it even lights up!
