Interview with Samantha Rice

Lovina Article by: Lovina/Vamp

I recently discovered an incredible clothing designer online. Her attention to detail, originality, and quality of work is absolutely stunning. A skill set like this is a dream come true for many cosplayers, who are trying to achieve this level of craftsmanship. She currently has a beautiful fairytale-esque line on her website, which you can view here.

What is your sewing skill origin? Was it originally a hobby or did you always view it as a future career?
I had wanted to go to Ryerson University for fashion design since I was in Grade 7. Seriously, I actually spent time looking up programs at age 12, decided that would be my path and never wavered. I think it came from watching my wonderful Mother sew me lots of clothes and costumes (I had the best princess dresses ever!) when I was young, she’s the one who taught me how to sew too. So I guess it was always going to be my future career!

Who or what inspires your creations?
A lot of my inspiration comes from stories, be they histories or fantasies (or both!). I have always loved Grimm’s fairy tales, I think my next personal challenge is to work through my old battered copy and design something for each story.

What are your favorite/least favorite aspects of sewing?
Hmm, favourite would have to be the actual construction process, there’s something very calming about methodically working through and piecing things together (not to mention all the TV and film I get to consume!), least favourite would definitely be the cutting stage. My hand gets all crampy and it requires so much space!

Do you cosplay as well? If so, what characters have you done? and what cons do you attend?
I do! Though, not as much as I’d like due to time constraints. Last year I did Kiki from Kiki’s Delivery Service and the “girl character” from Animal Crossing (I made the work uniform Nook gives you ^_^). I’m a bit new to it as well, I wish I knew about cosplay in high school! I’ve been to Anime North and FanExpo, this year I’ll only be attending AN since I’ll be out of the country during FanEx, but next year I’d love to go to PAX too. This year I’ll be cosplaying the CLAMP character Kobato and Mai from Avatar: The Last Airbender, super excited!

What is your dream cosplay?
Oooh, that’s a hard one. If I was fine-boned and paler I’d love to do Victorique from GOSICK, but as for something that would suit my body better, I’ve always loved Queen Amidala’s Parade outfit (the white, ruffly one…I wanted to be her so bad when that movie came out) but I don’t think I’m enough of a Star Wars buff to wear it confidently!

Would you be interested in doing commissions for other cosplayers in the future?
Absolutely!

Where do you plan/hope to go career wise? Film, Theater, Fashion?
Film/TV is where I hope to be in the next couple years, fingers crossed!

If you could go back in time, what year would you travel to and why? It can be fictional as well.
Can I go to the future? I’d love to go to 3012 and see what it’s like (WILL CATS FINALLY TAKE OVER THE WORLD?) Okay fine, back in time…as long as I can come back (and also be invisible, that’s totally possible right?) I’d go to the Elizabethan era, let’s say 1568, and nerd out over the court dress, maybe poke the Queen a bit.

Aside from sewing and being a crazy cat lady, what else do you do?
I love to make bento, bake yummy desserts and read All things that have been very neglected for the past year because of school, I’m excited to get back to some of that this summer! 10. Quick! The big bad wolf has cornered you!?!? What are your last words? This bites. ^_^; (badum ching)
