"Coraline is a movie that took me by surprise, and afterwards I just had to read the book by Neil Gaiman. My favourite character is by far the Cat, and one day I'd like to reshoot this cosplay with one of my three black kittens. As is stands though this is a cosplay I've had a lot of fun with - exploring the many aspects of the nature of Coraline Jones.
First and foremost I wanted to explore her friendship with Wybie. Although he was not featured in the book it was his relationship with Coraline that was one of the major draws into the film for me. The way she 'be-friends' Wybie, although one could argue they really just annoy each other, until she meets Other-Wybie. During these interactions it is interesting to see how her attitude changes from one of dominance and a need to be right to one of team work. Furthermore Wybie's sweetness as he tries to help save Coraline, and his apology in the real world for not believing her really solidify them as adorable couple in my mind. These are the kind of kids I'd imagine that grow up beside each other, see each other threw everything and then as adults would realize their love. Of course I also loved that the relationship demonstrated in the film was not a romantic one, but one of true comradery.
Secondly I wanted to explore Coraline's relationship with her Other Mother. I think most of us at some point in our lives have come into a situation where "The grass seems greener on the other side". I loved the ways the Other Mother found to weasel her way into Coraline's affections, but personally from the first time I saw her button eyes - I couldn't trust her. I also thought it would be interesting to shoot a photo where Coraline's Mother and her Other Mother are pulling her in different directions. I find it an interesting metaphor for the nature of people, how some whom we think are trying to help us and on our side will tear us down but others who seem uninterested or cruel are really looking out for our best interests. Sometimes the wolf hides in sheep's clothing, and it is up to us ourselves to develop a strong moral compass and a good judge of character."
