"Living on a small island in the middle of the pacific definitely has its advantage (i.e. – lots of private beaches to call your backyard) but those are often countered by equal disadvantages; top of that list – missing SDCC too many consecutive times. For any true comic connoisseur, sci-fi geek, or all around nerd, you feel my pain.
Whenever I can’t make it in person to SDCC I make it my mission to scour online for the new arrivals to the gaming, video, and comic world as well as new artists or buzz worthy up and comers. This year, I stumbled upon W. Scott Forbes. While I’ve heard his name thrown around before I realized I hadn’t ever registered work he had done or viewed any of his galleries previously. THEN – I did!
I was immediately enthralled and couldn’t stop scrolling through his blog, stopping at every jaw dropping image, more amazed the further the cursor descended. Then, I froze, on this image and was completely consumed. It was telling a story I had often been familiar with – the “what ifs” of reality. Everyone has contemplated where their life may end up when things become too difficult, tumultuous, or too unhappy, but, the “what if” of a life that is too perfect is even more disturbing.
The concept of a modern day Cinderella ending up in an asylum, bleeding from the broken glass of the very slippers that once made her dreams come true, flanked by birds- her only friends- and her slow demise - alone – haunted me. My creative juices were flowing and I couldn’t wait to tell the story in my own way.
Thus, enters the most amazing team anyone could ask for, and magic happened! There is nothing better than finding people that feed your creative whimsy and are on the same page. The photographer Manny Rona is a genius who has talent coming out of his pores, Sharmayne Kay is passionate about makeup and creating art – she treats every face like a personal canvas and Nadia Martinez is a hairdresser that is as skilled with a pair of scissors and pomade as Da Vinci with paints and a brush."
